Facts about us:
- Our mission is to expand knowledge about prostate cancer by providing speakers and a forum for attendees to openly discuss and learn with confidentiality.
- Usual attendance is between 10 and 25. We usually send advance notice of meetings beforehand to our contact list. We often engage speakers and always request suggestions for those whose message will benefit the group; please make your thoughts known by phone call or email to Nelson or Tom.
- Men, women, caregivers, and loved ones are invited to attend. All are welcome. No need to pre-register. Bring a snack to share and Nelson brings decaf coffee.
- Our independent support group collaborates with the Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer (MCFPC), which provides guidance, publicity and lists us on their website.
We also partner with Maine General Health and the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care (HACCC) and their annual Day of Hope each October. As a team, we fundraise for the walk and staff a booth to educate attendees on prostate cancer and invite them to our meetings. In 2022 we were able to raise $500.

to Nelson
1. We we are now at $288 toward our $600 goal! Only one week to go… Thank you to all who have donated!
2. Cancer survivors do not have to pay the registration fee.
3. Not registered? You can register when you show up. (Linda Allen will be at the Exhibition entrance on the first floor, at the first table on the left. She has given me approval to tell you.)
4. If you have registered and want to donate in person on the day, we (Prostate Cancer Warriors) will still get credit for your gift, so please tell her it is for our team.
5. Please come to our exhibit to help or just to see it. We can always find someone to talk with, and hand out rack cards.
6. The Alfond Center for Cancer Care has provided for us, print information to hand out.
For us, the most important aspect of this event is to engage people in conversation.

>> The cancer center has assigned a person to community outreach, and she will welcome us this month.
Her name is Heather H Moore LSW Holistic Healthcare Coordinator. She will come to meet us all-on Sept 26. I made these notes when I talked with her back in August…
NOTE
“Heather has lined us up for going back to the Alfond center with our prostate cancer group. She will come to speak at our first meeting which will be September 26, 2023. Heather is a cancer survivor who received the cure almost 2 years ago. She is still very worried that the cancer will come back and is waiting for the five-year marker of being cancer free. She has been at her new job for almost a year and is loving it as compared with her caseworker job of the past.
Please do come to meet Heather on Sept 26 and hear her story and about her plans for us.
>>> DAY OF HOPE
We are participating in the “Day of Hope” event to the benefit of the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, on October 7, 2023. We are hoping that many of you will be joining with us. Call Linda Allen, direct line, 207-626-4850 to register.
The name of our team is “Prostate Cancer Warriors.” Our fundraising goal is $600. I, (Nelson Leavitt), am the team leader this year. Call with questions. 207-441-5374
Our exhibit will be located in the same spot as last year and our main attraction will be “Elvis the Pelvis.” (Elvis is a huge inflated exhibit room, right next to our table.)
Come to do the walk, and help us meet people at our booth. We will be handing out rack cards with information about Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer www.mcfpc.org
Come to visit the other exhibits and learn “Who’s Who.”
Come and have a fun day with us and support the Alfond Center, too!
See you on the walk, and/or at our exhibits.
Nelson Leavitt, Team Leader
(This is my 22nd year of survivorship, praise God!)
Sept 26 Kennebec Area Prostate Cancer Support Group meeting held at Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care
It was our first night back at HACCC in over 2 years. See photos below.
* 22 filled the long table
* Including Heather Moore, our coordinator and group’s caretaker (sorry not to include her in the group photo) (Karen Dore took the photo on her phone, so no image of her happy face, either)
* Heather told us about HACCC’s initiative to welcome, and the job made for her, to engage community support groups, and be our person helping us every way she can. (We are grateful to have our monthly meetings reserved for the Prescott Room for the next year.)
* Dale hand-crafted a twinkle-light holder to present to Heather. He also gave a wooden pumpkin made using salvaged pallet-wood, to be awarded as a door prize. It was won by Daniel. Thank you Dale!
* 3 new men and one new partner joined us last night
* Bob, Gail and daughter Karen were celebrating Gail’s 80th trip around the sun. We all pitched in Happy Birthday chorus. I got big hugs from her and Karen!🥰
* Pete and Nancy received a long, loud applause for their re-marriage, uniting again after 30 years ❤️❤️ I first met Pete at the old MeGen hospital in 2006, after his treatment for PCa
* Pete’s old boss at Maine State Police maintenance garage was a first time attendee invited by Bob and Gail. We welcomed Gene and Sylvia.
Jed gifted a full box of men’s depends. Half was accepted by a member present and Heather will give the other half to a late-stage cancer patient from a different support group. Thank you Jed.
* Everyone agreed this photo could be used for promotion of our group and by HACCC. I told them it would be shared and if they did not want to be in it, they should step away until after the photo. All stayed. These wonderful people all share the desire to show others that cancer can be lived with.
* We joined in unison to support Day of Hope by raising $80 with the “passing of the hat.” This gift will be credited to our walk team, “Prostate Cancer Warriors.” Several members from our group have, or will register to join our team on Oct 7.
Thank you all!!!
Gail and Bob. Bob is a 12 year survivor. His PCa was metastatic from the first day when he found out his PSA was 5000! Bob and I have spent many hours in comradeship at HACCC, including about 4 years of weekly sessions in the past at Pen-in-Hand, writing and reading our masterpieces.
Pete and Nancy the newly weds!
