Nine 30-minute videos about prostate cancer and its effect on the lives of Maine families have been produced by the Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer (MCFPC) and Time Warner Cable of Maine.

Videos in the series

Part 1 of the series is entitled “Prostate Cancer: What Men and Women Need to Know.” The video features Mona Ervin as host with panelists Jon Henry of Hampden, Michael Todd of Brunswick and Nelson Leavitt of Augusta. The three panelists, all prostate cancer survivors, tell their stories from diagnosis through treatment and detail the emotional impact on their wives and families. Mona Ervin is the wife of a prostate cancer survivor and discusses the impact of prostate cancer on spouses and family members. The program was first played on local cable stations around the state during September, 2009 – Prostate Awareness Month.

Part 2 of the series is entitled, “Prostate Cancer: What Men and Women Need to Know – Part 2.” This program also features Mona Ervin as host and moderator with panelists: Terry Kungle of Woolwich, Arthur Stolpestad of South Portland, and Jon Henry of Hampden, Maine.

Part 3 of the series, “What Men and Women Need to Know About Prostate Cancer – Treatment Options” was recorded in spring 2011 and features host Mona Ervin discussing the various prostate cancer treatment options with a panel surviors.

Part 4 of the series “What Men and Women Need to Know About Prostate Cancer – Turning Tables” was recorded in July 2011. In this video, host Mona Ervin discusses the effects of prostate cancer on spouses and partners with a panel of two women whose lives were changed by the disease.

Part 5 of the series “What Men and Women Need to Know About Prostate Cancer” called “Prostate Cancer: The Issues about Screening or Testing – It’s Your Body and Your Decision” was recorded in summer 2012. In this video, host Mona Ervin discusses the recent controversy over screening/testing with a panel of three men whose lives were changed by the disease. The panelists include: Terrance Kungle, Michael Mahan, and Bruce McClenahan.

Part 6 of the series, “What Men and Women Need to Know About Prostate Cancer” focuses on the two cancers. “Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer: Similarities & Differences” was recorded in May 2013 and features Mona Ervin as host, with panelists, Terrance Kungle, Al Fitzsimmons, Meredith Strang-Burgess and Samantha Wilkison. The panelists, all cancer survivors, two survivors of prostate cancer and two survivors of breast cancer discuss their experiences, how the causes of the two cancers are related, and how the emotional consequences of the diseases can be very similar.

Part 7 of the series, “Cancer and Your Life” was recorded in September 2014 and features host Mona Ervin speaking with three Men men who cancer survivors. Panelists include John Henry, Tom Seavey and Tom Lane.

Part 8 of the series, “Cancer and Your Life – Cancer Support Centers in Maine” was recorded in May 2015 and hosted by Michael Jones, Board Advisor to MCFPC. In this video, we learn more about some of the wonderful support services that exist in Maine to help those on their cancer journey. Guests include Mary Dempsey, Assistant Director of the Patrick Dempsey Center of Hope and Healing in Lewiston, ME., Mark Smith, educator, who continues to deal with prostate cancer and Michael Reisman, the Executive Director for the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center in Ellsworth, ME.

Part 9 of the series “Cancer and Your Life – Cancer Support Centers in Maine – Part 2” was recorded in January 2016 and hosted by Michael Jones Board Advisor to MCFPC. In this video, we continue to learn more about some of the wonderful support services that exist in Maine to help those on their cancer journey. Guests include Nicole Avery, Executive Director of Cancer Community Center of South Portland, Nelson Leavitt, one of the founders of MCFPC and Sue Craib, founder of the Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine.
