The LiveStrong Foundation is once again partnering with the Bath YMCA to offer a free 12 week program of fitness for cancer patients and survivors. This new program will begin on February 22nd. Please contact Erica Lozier at 443-4112 ext. 41 (email ) for more information and to sign up.
MCFPC member, Ted Markow (Brunswick), got fit and strong at the Bath YMCA as part of the LiveStrong Foundation's partnership with the YMCA. This free twelve-week program is designed to help adult cancer survivors in all facets of physical fitness, including endurance, strength, and flexibility.
According to the LiveStrong website:
"Our goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels and self esteem. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle, not only as part of their recovery, but as a way of life. In addition to the physical benefits, the program provides participants a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, YMCA staff and members."
The first couple of 75-minute sessions are geared toward information, instruction, and physical assessment. The rest of the sessions include proper stretching, different ways to increase stamina and endurance, and the proper use of weight machines to strengthen muscles and increase bone mass.
According to Ted, "This program has been a great way for me to get back into shape and focus on my health and long-term survival. As with all of the participants, the instructors are familiar with my physical needs and limitations and have tailored my program accordingly. And, they know how to encourage me to reach the goals I set out in the beginning. Just as importantly is the sense of camaraderie that has developed between us all. All-in-all, it has been a wonderful and positive experience!"
